In 2020, the surrounding situation was turbulent. Facing the oppression from Western forces and in order to deal with new crises, the government urgently needed a single-seat twin-engine heavy fighter to fill the equipment gap between the J16 and J20. Therefore, the great Chairman of the Central Military Commission, General Zhang, restarted the halted J11D program and upgraded it again on the original basis to the J11E. Finally, the first flight was completed on October 1, 2024, and it was officially equipped with a certain brigade of the PLA Air Force on June 4, 2025. As an advanced super-fourth-generation aircraft, the J11E is equipped with the most advanced AEST radar and an extremely advanced warning system of China's military industry, enhancing the electronic warfare capability and having a new engine. To fill a part of the long-range air-to-air combat gap in various theater commands of the PLAF, the J11E can carry advanced ultra-long-range air-to-air missiles such as the PL17 to target enemy early warning aircraft. At the same time, as a heavy fighter, the J11E also has a good ground attack carrying performance. However, as an air superiority fighter, it is not recommended for uses such as CAS.
