The trebuchet , also called a trebuchet , almajaneque or stone thrower , is a medieval siege weapon , used to destroy walls or launch projectiles at the walls.
It is believed to have been invented in China between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, and spread westwards by the Avars , being adopted by the Byzantines in the mid- 5th century . The counterweight trebuchet was a development of the traction trebuchet, appearing in the Christian and Muslim lands of the Mediterranean around the 12th century , and this design reached China in the 13th century through the Mongol conquests.
