History: In 1972, British Aerospace Engineering (BAE) designed a new interceptor/fighter aircraft to combat the threat of Soviet nuclear bombers. The project produced three prototypes, all of which were outfitted with different weapon and crew configurations (one sat two pilots and a bombardier, one sat a pilot and a weapons officer, and the other sat one pilot). Only about fifteen went into service in 1978, and by then it was already outclassed. They served with the RAF for five years before all fifteen were given to the Israeli Air Force, who scrapped five (and, later in 1981, five more) before giving the remaining aircraft to the United States Air Force (USAF). The USAF kept four and returned one to a British museum in 1989, giving it its original paint scheme. The aircraft is still there and has been flown at a few local air shows since.
