On the morning of September 1, 1983, Korean Airlines Flight 007 took off from New York and refueled in Anchorage before flying to Seoul. On the way, due to a crew error, it accidentally entered Soviet airspace and was intercepted by a Soviet Air Force Su-15 interceptor. Due to improper handling by the Soviet side, Flight 007 was ultimately shot down and crashed into the high seas southwest of Sakhalin Island.
