Auto Credit Based on MAHADI's COLD WAR Challenge [CLOSED]

Intro

The next one in my Triple-S (Soviet Sukhoi Stovepipes) series, and a nice fit for the Cold War Challange. This planes features;

  • Ugly, typically Soviet utilitarian design (don't look at me, I just copied it...)
  • Reasonably accurate replica of the original
  • Custom missiles
  • Custom, snugly fitting landing gear
  • Working intake cone & overpressure vents
  • Lots of red stars and other decals

History

The Su-11 was an upgraded version of the Sukhoi Su-9 "Fishpot" interceptor, which had been developed in parallel with Sukhoi's swept-wing Su-7 fighter-bomber. The design combined the proven wings, tail and centre/rear fuselage of the Su-9 with a revised nose section and larger radome sized to accommodate the new "Uragan 5B" radar, designed to illuminate targets for attack with the radar-guided version of the R-98 (AA-3 Anab) missile. Available in radar and infra-red guided forms, the Anab was a massive weapon with impressive range. Each Su-11 carried two missiles– one under each wing. Normal Soviet Air Force practice was to carry one radar-guided missile and one IR homer. No cannon was fitted – a common but rather mistaken late-1950s design feature in several countries.

Like the Su-7, the Su-11 was an inelegant solution to the problem of creating a supersonic fighter, and one which substituted sheer brute force (in the form of a ten-tonne thrust engine) for aerodynamic refinement. As such, the Su-11 was something of a limited success and only replaced some of the older Su-9's in service. It remained an interim interceptor design at best and was retired during the early 1980's as more advanced aircraft became available. The series was also never exported to Soviet allies of the period.

Armament

The plane is equipped with a Su-11's standard (and only) armament; a pair of R-98 (AA-3 "Anab") missiles, one radar-guided and one IR homer.

Controls

AG1 : Drag chute
AG2 : Air brakes
AG3 : Dump the drop tanks

@K2K The Su11 is faster, and there is no big performance gap, the Mig21 has become a myth, the most manufactured, and very capable jet for its time, but the Su11 is an interceptor, the Mig21 a plane to do everything, they do not have the same roles. In dogfight the Mig would have the advantage, the other having no cannon, but the SU11 is not intended for dogfights.

In combat though, I think my mig entry could beat this Su. Its "modernised" with more missiles, and has guns. Id say the mig is better cause it has a cannon IRL

@AircraftoftheRedStar depends on what you mean by "follow"... I have a look at 'em, certainly. But building with some cluttered blueprints on my screen in the background puts me off more than a bit :D :D
