GP-229 Helot
The brief for this attack plane was for a relatively simple, cheap machine, designed purely for one purpose - no multirole capability was desired. With this specification, a single-engine design was decided on as being less expensive and less complex than a multi-engine design. The engine intakes are mounted high on the fuselage, keeping them shielded from ground fire and minimising the risk of debris getting sucked in when operating from impromptu / rough airfields. A large T-tail was used to keep the tail control surfaces clear of the jet exhaust, as well as to assist in keeping the craft stable for attack runs. The wings are relatively large to provide plenty of lift, useful both for carrying a heavy payload of weapons and giving good STOL performance to allow the plane to be used from smaller dirt strips such as Bandit. It also allows extended loitering at low speeds - large fuel tanks are fitted in the wings, and the lift they generate easily allows stable flight to be maintained at reduced engine throttle. The wings also provide space for 16 hardpoints, allowing a large and varied weapon loadout to be carried, along with a pair of light machine guns to be used for strafing targets of opportunity. The demonstration loadout carried here is fairly typical, allowing long-range engagement with the cannon, intermediate range engagement with the rocket pods, or bombs to be dropped while overflying the target. The cockpit is positioned towards the nose, giving good visibility for attack runs, as well as ground operations. Finally, some countermeasures are mounted to the tail, giving the plane some protection from ground-based anti-air missiles. It also carried 550lbs of armour (represented by adding dead weight to fuselage blocks), giving it decent protection from bullets and shrapnel.
Standard controls, activate AG1 for the lights.
