History:
The main combat experience of the British Harrier was during the Falklands War against Argentina, where both Sea Harrier and Harrier GR.3 were used. The Sea Harrier, based on GR.3, was important in naval activities. Twenty Sea Harrier operated from HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible aircraft carriers primarily for air defense. Although they destroyed 23 Argentine airplanes (due in part to the use of the latest Sidewinder missile models since Argentine airplanes operated at extreme distances), they were unable to achieve complete air superiority and prevent daytime or nighttime Argentine attacks or stop transport flights C-130 Hercules to the islands. The British lost three Sea Harrier by anti-aircraft fire and another three by accidents. The Harrier GR.3 operated with the RAF from the Hermes and provided close support to the ground troops and attacked Argentine positions although it could not destroy the Puerto Argentino / Stanley track. The RAF Harrier did not re-enter combat and Hawker Siddeley's structures would be replaced by the new RAF Harrier II developed by McDonnell Douglas.
