MAZ 7904 (Celina-1)

19.9k SpartanSR91  3.1 years ago

This colossal 12x12, known as the MAZ 7904 was a prototype vehicle designed for transport and launch of Soviet nuclear missiles in 1983. The main engine was a 1,500 hp V12 turbodiesel engine that was connected to two 4-speed hydromanual transmissions. The MAZ 7904 also had an auxiliary 330 hp V8 that powered the hydraulics and other electrical systems. Each wheel had its own hydropneumatic suspension system, and each hub had a set of planetary gears. However, this "House" version was never built in real life, as the 12 massive wheels had 30 tons of ground pressure apiece. The 360 metric tonne vehicle would easily get bogged down in mud and other soft terrain, or snap its wheel bearings from the massive weight. The immense ground pressure, combined with the massive size of the tractor, forced the Soviets to pull the plug on the project. The only prototype of this machine, left to rust in a random warehouse, eventually collapsed under its own weight in 2006.

This model represents the fully finished MAZ 7904 project, complete with a "House" on the top of the vehicle's frame. This "House" was actually a weather-proofed structure that would contain the Missile Launch System. Not much is known about the Celina-1 Project, so take this model with a grain of salt. The RT-23 Molodets was used in a similar mobile nuclear missile silo, but is unknown whether or not it was the intended missile for Celina-1.
