Dassault improved the Etendard IV in the 1970's to bring it up to date as a maritime strike and nuclear weapons delivery system for the French Navy. Revisions included additional engine power, revised wing, improved low speed handling and the addition of lots of new electronics including the Avgarde radar system which allowed the plane to air deliver the Exocet AM34 Air to Surface Missile. This combination in the hands of the Argentine Navy and then later the Iraqi air force proved a lethal system, sinking HMS Sheffield a modern AA Destroyer and MS Atlantic Conveyor (a merchant ship that had been converted as a merchant air operating base) in 1982. The five missiles and four planes that Argentina fielded also kept the British Carriers far out East of the Falklands beyond the range of the land based aircraft limiting the effectiveness of the carriers in protecting the vital landings in this campaign. In 1983 The Iraqis acquired 5 Super E's and a lot of exocet missiles and used these with significant success during the Tanker War with Iran where any tanker taking oil from an Iranian port was deemed a legitimate target. This example is carrying one AM34 and on the other wing a range extending fuel tank an odd combination but not unheard of for actual missions.
