Designed as a smaller counterpart to the San Silba class attack submarines, the Maelstrom class attack submarines were designed for stealth.

Created by Horizon Fleet Systems as "Project S-185" in response to a bid sent out by the Erandian government, the Maelstrom class submarines had 12 submarines planned, and 6 more if needed. ERN Maelstrom (SSD-82) was the first of her class.

Powered by 3 diesel engines and 4 Sterling AIPs, the submarine has a max speed of 30 knots on batteries and 7 knots on the AIPs. The AIPs are used for silent mode.

Well-armed, the Maelstrom class has 4 torpedo tubes, 23 inches in diameter.
A VLS is capable of holding and firing ASCM-4 cruise missiles and IDAS-1 SAMs. It also comes equipped with an electronics warfare suite and 24 launcher tubes for Hard-kill and soft-kill countermeasures.

Equipped with an SCS 9-K4 Integrated sonar sensor suite, it can switch between using passive sonar and active sonar. At a cost of 73 million ER, the Maelstrom is purchasable by any Erandian ally.

All ships will be constructed in San Silba shipyards.
