One of these aircraft spiked the interest of Pavel Zhigarev, the chief of the Soviet Airforce. It was the Junkers JU-37 a medium Bomber with forward swept wings. As the Cold War escalated and both sides had the potential to strike deep into enemy territory, the Soviet Union needed a interceptor capable of destroying American bomber formations. Suchoi was given the contract to design such an interceptor. Taking inspiration from the JU-37 they designed a plane with forward swept wings and canards, this combination made it a bit unstable, but also very maneuverable. It was armed with R-220 “Radon” Air to Air missiles, that had a atomic warhead and could destroy multiple targets at once.
