The first plane to break the speed of sound. Flown by USAF Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager, Bell X-1 #46-062 (Glamorous Glennis) was drop launched from a modified B-29 on October 14, 1947. The plane reached a speed of Mach 1.06 that day. The number of B-29 engines was adjusted due to the small size of the propellers. Both fly, but the X-1, unfortunately, does not reach Mach 1.
