Heinkel He 111Z-2 "Zwilling"

82.8k SimplyPlain  4.9 years ago

The He 111Z “Zwilling” was a design that entailed the merging of two He 111s and was originally conceived to tow the massive Messerschmitt Me 321 glider.

The version shown is the Z-2 long-range bomber, which could carry four Henschel Hs 293 anti-shipping guided missiles, remote controlled through FuG 203b Kehl III missile control equipment. The Z-2 never entered service; production was originally planned to take place in 1944, just as bomber production was being abandoned.

• AG1 : flaps
• AG2 : assigns control of machine guns/turrets to the VTOL & Trim sliders
• AG3 : nav lights
• AG4 : assigns the trim slider to the pitch trim tabs
• AG5 : (un)locks tail wheel steering

The Hs 293’s are, of course, simple “cleavers” in disguise. I did test a version with “remote control”, where these bombs were actually small planes with standard flight controls –but they take too long to get to the target, and all the while the Heinkel simply lumbers on straight & level, which is the best way to get killed. Not very practical.
