The Haile Selassie-class are a class of large multirole guided-missile destroyers operated by the Winolian Empire’s Royal Navy. The class are designed as epicentre ships and form the pivot arm of the navy Amphibious operation group alongside the Kandake class LHD. Winolian media often touts them as being one of the most technologically advanced and combat-capable ships in the world.

The ships were designed by the Royal Shipbuilding Consortium and work contracts were awarded to both Alexandria Shipyards and the Adwa Royal Yards. An initial 10 destroyers were planned, the number increasing to 14 after re-evaluations of the surface fleet requirements.

These destroyers would the First to be built for the Winolian navy by Winolian companies since the 1950s, combining decades of work, research and experience into a highly capable platform.

In the 1970s, the Winolian navy operated foreign-built destroyers while local companies grew in technical skill and expertise. Thanks to help gained from international partners, the national frigate programme had gained speed tremendously and plans for a future core surface combatant were tendered. At the time it was noted that no company possessed the capacity to manufacture such a ship and alongside the LHD project, the plan was placed under extended design study.

As the 1980s drew to a close and the early 90s rolled in, the plan was again revived and the recently formed “Royal Shipbuilding Consortium” began to work on refining early designs and incorporating modern technologies. By ‘98, the design and project planning had been completed and the first ship was slated for production. The first ship and her sister were built simultaneously, with a 6-month lag to ensure lessons learnt from the first build could swiftly be applied to the second. Both ships launched in 2003 and were commissioned a year after into the Royal Winolian Navy.

The Haile Selassie destroyers are 175m in overall length, have a beam of 20 feet and a draught of 7.5 feet and displace approximately 10,000 tonnes at full load. Some international bodies class them as cruisers. The ships were originally designed by a team headed by Sir Bassam Quershi and his team before being redesigned by the RSC. Extensive focus on the ships ability to engage in combat on its own against a variety of foes influenced the final design, resulting in extensive signature reduction and the incorporating of an AESA radar as the main combat element. The ships use Innovative Winolian CODLAG powerplants. Original designs called for the use of IEP but technology limitations prevented their use.
