The Soepidjat-Ratoereng SoR-17 "Harimau Laut" (lit. "Sea Tiger") is an Indonesian single-seat, naval-based fighter aircraft, built by the Indonesian aircraft manufacturer, Perusahaan Pesawat Udara Soepidjat-Ratoereng. The aircraft made it's first flight on 1953 and was entered service with the Angkatan Laut Republik Indonesia (now TNI AL), on 1955. Upon it's entry to service, the aircraft would be stationed in KRI Sukarno.
Development
Following the success on SoR-15, Perusahaan Pesawat Udara Soepidjat-Ratoereng decided to make a new navalized version of the same aircraft.
The aircraft's prototype began to be assembled. The fuselage was strengthened in order to be used for carrier operations, to prevent the fuselage from breaking off when the aircraft catches it's arresting cable upon landing. The arresting hook was placed behind the back of the landing gear, with the tail fuselage extended on it.
After the completions, the aircraft made it's first flight. The aircraft passed it's tests such as carrier operations and others. The aircraft was finally entered service with the Indonesian Navy, after many test flights.
Operational History
The first batches of SoR-17 was delivered to Indonesian Navy and was put into service on 1955. The aircraft, during it's entry to service, was stationed in KRI Sukarno.
Following the Permesta Rebellion, the aircraft was deployed to counter against AUREV B-26 bombers. One of which managed to shoot down successfully, but 5 were lost to AUREV B-26 bombers.
Following the start of Operation Trikora (Indonesian: Operasi Trikora), The SoR-17s were deployed from KRI Sukarno, as the aircraft began to attack the Dutch military bases, in Dutch New Guinea. 6 were lost to Dutch military - 3 were shot down by Hawker Hunter, while 3 were lost to AA fire.
Following the retirement of KRI Sukarno in 1972, the aircraft ended up operating in airbases instead. The aircraft remained in service until in 1975, when the F3P3 Seagull began to replace the aircraft. The last type was finally retired in 1978.
Variants
- SoR-17A - First production model introduced in 1955 to Indonesian Navy.
- SoR-17B - Variant with hardpoints.
- SoR-17C - Naval photo reconnaissance variant. It's armaments were removed and the camera was placed on the back of the fuselage.
Some other variants were proposed too, but they were cancelled when KRI Sukarno was retired in 1972.
