Your basic trench-raiding kit. From left to right, is the following: entrenching tool/your melee weapon, MP20 submachine gun, and M28 stick-type hand grenade. The entrenching tool will be your weapon of choice, as the confines of a trench obviates melee combat.

You simply dig a foxhole, invite your squad to help, and go caveman on anyone with a tin bowler or Adrian on their head who wishes to evict you.

The gun in the middle is your MP20 submachine gun. 3.75 kilograms, 20-round magazine, and the ability to put those 20 9mm Luger bullets out in 2 seconds. Compared to modern weapons, it seems rather weak; high weight, low ammunition capacity, and not a considerable rate of fire increase. So why is it so good? Because the other poor sap has an bolt-action rifle. And in the space it takes him to ready another shot, you have emptied your entire magazine into him and his platoon.

Finally, the M28 grenade. Affixed to a stick in order to increase throwing distance, it fits neatly in your boot or belt. All you have to do is unscrew the basecap, pull it off, and throw it. Four second fuse. If there's an annoying Vickers or Hotchkiss pinning you and your squad down, lob a few of these in their direction and wait for the pop your grenade will make and the screams of pain.

A neat feature of the M28 is that if there is a tank, all you do is get six more grenade heads, strap them together, and lob the monstrosity on the top of one of them. Or under it. Just, throw until the guys either get out or the tank goes on fire and the guys are getting out.
