The Gregale was a single-engined heavy bomber once employed by the Legion for the Reunification of Italy (LRI), in their nearly successful but ultimately doomed attempt at reuniting the Italian peninsula after the old Crumbling-era emergency government broke up into small warlord cliques, supported by both military remnants and paramilitary groups.
By this point, the LRI, coming from the North, had managed to control most of the peninsula thanks to both holding the former Italian economic heartland and gaining more support from foreign powers, thus enabling them to field aircraft. The end of this project would be brought about by the CIR: After the Nova Evropan Wars, the broader mindset in that country ha dchanged from a "live and le tlive" isolationism to an interventionist, expansionist position, that sought to spread the black flag of anarchy and destroy all authoritarian polities around them, expecting any future invasion to be an intrinsic inevitability. While the SFR, was spared both because their former alliance during said wars made willingness to make war on them low at the time, and because their representative democratic system made inroads towards sowing the seeds of revolt very difficult, other polities weren't so lucky, as the LRI would find out: while all that were left were an underground resistance and a few pockets in the Tyrrhenian coast, the CIR's support would lead to the end of the LRI at reasserting a harsh yet needed semblance of order.
The Gregale itself reflects a broader trend towards preferring triplanes among the LRI. In this case, the configuration not only maximizes the lift available to a plane expected to carry large payloads at night, but also maintains structural integrity. While slow, it's massive payload capacity not only made it a cost-effective means of reprisal against rebels and bandits, but also made it a versatile aircraft, capable of being adapted to transport duties.
