盡管A7Y型艦載戰鬥機原型二號機完成了其餘的試驗,但是著艦試驗仍舊以失敗告終。

為了加快製造速度,A8N使用了A6M零式艦載戰鬥機同款翼型,縮短機體長度亦使其擁有了并不比A7Y型差多少的機動性能,低速性能尚可,相比於A7Y型復雜的翼型和機體,製造速度大大加快。引擎用的A7Y同款,但是航速比A7Y快,達到了621.5kmh(A7Y是619.5kmh(日常海军精神.jpg))。其較高的翼載并没有被浪费,設計師給A8N加上了三个挂架,可以挂載兩發爆弹,一發魚雷。由於翼展与機體長度短,一隻空母能擕帶更多的A8N。A8N不僅能空戰,亦可參與對艦對陸的攻擊,隻要投下了爆弹魚雷,又可以參與空戰。海军省對A8N型機寄與了厚望,適逢皇紀2606年,A8N型定名為零六式艦載戰鬥機,意為希望其能像零式艦載戰鬥機、九六式艦載戰鬥機一樣,成為當代世界最強艦載戰鬥機。
