The M1911 was designed by John Browning and was used by the United States' military from 1911-1986. In 1986 the M1911 was replaced by the berretta M9. Due to the M1911's popularity, it has not been completly phased out. The M1911 is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered in the powerful .45 ACP cartridge. It is used by 28 nations. It was manufactured by Colt and about 2.7 million were made.
