The MiG-23K was a carrier-based variant of the MiG-23 developed for the Soviet Navy, but the project was ultimately canceled. The ship it was intended for was Project 1153 "Orel", a Soviet aircraft carrier design that was planned in the 1970s as a more advanced and capable carrier compared to the Kiev-class.
Project 1153 "Orel" was envisioned as a CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) carrier, similar to American supercarriers, and was supposed to carry fixed-wing aircraft like the MiG-23K and Su-25K. However, the program was canceled in 1973 due to political and economic constraints, and the Soviet Navy instead continued with the Kiev-class carriers, which were designed to operate VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft like the Yak-38.
