HMS warrior 1860
Total Time spent on build: 238 hours of placing wings that look smaller than hairs on my screen
THE HMS WARRIOR & HER ARMAMENT
She was the first of the 2 warrior class armoured steam frigates, she was ordered in 1859 in response to a french armoured frigate "Gloire" unlike the Gloire warrior had an Wrought Iron casement covering the whole centre of the ship it was practically inpenetrable by French roundshot firing cannons! She was commissioned and launched in 1860 and as the tradition goes the first ship of its class is named after the class itself he sister ship the HMS Black prince (not racist) was commissioned later in there year, Warrior had an early refit and had all her 40 68 pounder guns take out and replaced by 40 Armstrong rifled beach loading 110 pounders that fired shells instead of roundshot , she was also armed with 26 68 pounders along the top deck (201mm guns) and 4 40 pounder guns she also received 4 20 pounders and two Carronades (a type of howitzer).
HER ARMOUR
In the centre of the ship a huge case ment protected the gun desck and engine room this armour convicted of 4.5 inches of wrought iron backed by 18 inches of Teak (a tropical hardwood)
The front & rear were unprotected but seperate do by watertight compartments to minimise flooding,
PROPULTION
She had a two cylinder 5,772 hp trunk steam engine made by Jhon Penn&Sons steam was provided by 10 rectangular boilers under the waterline she carried 867 tons of coal that can provide steam for 2100 nautical miles at 11 knots
She also had sails that can get her up to 14 knots her propellor could be raised into the ship by 600 men to reduce drag and he funnels were made of faobric and folded down! She once got to 20mph with steam and sail together! That's fast!
CREW
50 officers
656 ratings (sailors)
And of those ratings 122 wee marines
COMBAT
She never realy saw combat but acted as a guard ship in the later years of service but in 1902 was converted into the Royal Navy torpedo school and was converted to an oil jetty in 1921
There she remained untill she was donated to the Maritime Trust in 1979
RESTORATION
The overall restoration of the ship cost 9 million £ and removed thinfs added like a poop deck (bit at the back that sticks up) and the concrete decking from the oil service the figure head took 5 years to carve and after a long restoration of 8 years she was towed to the Portsmouth historic dockyard and remains there as a museum ship for us all to see :)
ENJOY
the real warrior is currently in Portsmouth and sits in a dock next to HMS victory and the Mary Rose building I higly recomend IT I had a lot of fun visiting this ship and going around on the inside unfortunately Victory and MaryRose are undergoing restoration so I don't think u can visit them but it might be fixed lol :)
NOTE TO SAILORS
keep throttle at 10%-20% for semirealistic speed and lifeboats can be fired with a detatcher number.. But I forgot what one cause I made it long ago...
