The Viridian pilots were not happy. "Railguns are effective and all," they said, "but where's the challenge in using a weapon that instantly obliterates anything you shoot at? Where's the honor? Where," they grumbled, "is the fun?"
"Give us a weapon that takes skill," they continued. "Give us a weapon that makes giant explosions. I miss flying through the fireball after a successful hit, dammit."
The engineers delivered. They created a railgun-bomb hybrid, a bomb cannon, that launched bombs -- massive, truly gigantic bombs -- at low speeds. Bombs big enough and speeds slow enough to see with the naked eye. Bombs that didn't travel in a straight line, but followed a gentle arc, so that the pilots could have their fun guesstimating the correct angle of elevation. They mounted it in a suitably large bomber, and named it "Trebuchet."
The pilots loved the plane, but said "Trebu-what? What kind of geeky name is that? We'll call it... Warwolf."

@Pilotmario Well, no, that doesn't mean much at all. It'd sound like saying "independently-developed wheelbarrow." I do think I created something new -- an accurate ballistic bomb launcher -- and popularised it as the BombCannon/BigSlowBombCannon.
Probably "independently developed bomb-launcher" just to be on the safe side. @SledDriver

@Pilotmario Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they weren't bomb cannons -- I coined and defined the term. A bomb cannon is a weapon that launches massive bombs in a ballistic trajectory with a visible curve. Every bomb-detacher configuration I've been able to find before mine was essentially a hitscan weapon, where the bombs are small, travel in effectively a straight line, and hit the target instantly. I call them railguns.
The earliest example of such a railgun is this one, from seven months ago.
Actually, I've been using bomb cannons for at least a few months before this.
