Standard -3 missile (SM-3) is a derivative of RIM-156 SM-2ER Block4 missile, and it is also a missile component in the future US Navy Theater Ballistic Missile Defense System (NTW-TBMD). It is a high-level ballistic missile defense weapon. It was originally planned as a supplement to the low-level SM-2ER Block4A missile, but the development plan of the latter was cancelled in December 2001.
