About Out:

The Airbus A318 is a civil passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus , the European aircraft manufacturing consortium. It is the smallest member of the A320 family , for which it is sometimes referred to as the Mini-Airbus or Baby-bus. During development it was known as the A319M3 , indicating that it is a derivative of the A319 but with three fewer fuselage sections. The aircraft is 6 metres shorter and 14 tonnes lighter than its predecessor. Its shorter length means that it must have a vertical stabiliser 80 cm higher than the rest of the A320 family (the Airbus A319 , A320 and A321 respectively).

The A318 can carry 117 passengers in a 2-class configuration. It was created to replace the old DC-9 , Fokker 100 and early models of the Boeing 737 , as well as competing with the current Boeing 737-600 and Boeing 717 .

The A318 is available in several versions with different maximum take-off weights (between 59 and 68 tonnes) and ranges (2750 km to 6000 km), allowing it to operate regional routes economically by sacrificing range, or complement the other larger members of the family. on low-density medium-range routes. Although due to its lighter weight it can carry out routes that the A320 cannot, companies use it mainly for short routes between medium-sized cities.

During the design process of the aircraft, Airbus encountered several problems. The biggest was undoubtedly the decrease in demand for new aircraft after the attacks of September 11, 2001 ; another was the design of the Pratt & Whitney PW6000 turbofan engines, which were to power the aircraft: they burned more fuel than expected and had to be redesigned, so it had to use a CFMI engine (the CFM56-5) at first until the Pratt & Whitney version was optimized and ready. There are currently versions with both engines.
