Tiger I with MG-34
The Tiger I is a German heavy tank used in World War II , produced since late 1942 as a tank to cope with the unexpectedly strong resistance of Soviet armored forces in the early years. the first month of Operation Barbarossa , especially the T-34 and KV-1 . Tiger I was the first tank of the German army ( Wehrmacht ) to have a main gun of up to 88mm , which had previously proven effective against enemy tanks. During the course of the war, Tiger I fought on all German fronts. It is often deployed in independent heavy tank battalions, with quite a lot of power, but maintaining it is quite complicated, the vehicle is prone to malfunctions, and also costs a lot to manufacture. 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944.With thick armor and powerful firepower, the Tiger I was a formidable opponent for enemy medium tanks such as the T-34 or M4 Sherman . On the Western front, the US-British coalition did not have heavy tanks, so the Tiger I's superiority lasted throughout the war. However, on the Eastern front, the Tiger I's superiority over Soviet tank forces did not last long. In early 1944, the Soviet Union mass-produced IS-2 heavy tanks with superior firepower and armor compared to the Tiger I, and were much easier to produce and maintain, causing the Tiger I to lose its advantage. By August 1944, production of the Tiger I was discontinued to make way for the more powerful Tiger II .
The car was nicknamed "Tiger" by Ferdinand Porsche , and the Roman numerals were added after the Tiger II type went into production. The original official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H (' Panzer VI version H', abbreviated PzKpfw VI Ausf. H ), but the tank was renamed PzKpfw VI Ausf. E in March 1943. It also had the inventory designation SdKfz 181 .
Today only about ten Tiger Is remain in museums and exhibitions around the world. Perhaps the most notable version is Tiger number 131 at the Bovington Tank Museum , currently the only one preserved in operational condition.
