M10 Ersatz
M10 Ersatz
World War II Ger- Uh, I mean American Tank Destroyer
About the M10 Ersatz
The unofficially dubbed ‘Ersatz M10s’ were a cadre of German Panther tanks disguised as American/Allied M10 Tank Destroyers during the Battle of the Bulge in Winter 1944, in the Malmedy region of Eastern Belgium. Also known commonly as the Ardennes Offensive, the Battle of the Bulge was one of the last major pushes undertaken by the German Army during the Second World War. During the battle, a section of the Wehrmacht employed an elaborate attempt at subterfuge, in what is now one of the most well-known ‘False Flag’ operations in the history of mechanized warfare. The deception of disguising Panthers as Allied M10 3in GMC tank destroyers was part of a larger operation – codenamed Greif – devised by Adolf Hitler himself. The operation itself fell under the command of the infamous Waffen-SS Commando, Otto Skorzeny, Mussolini’s knight in bloodied armor, and self-proclaimed as “the most dangerous man in Europe”…
To quote the fictional Captain George Mainwaring; the deception could be considered “just the sort of shabby trick the Nazis would play”, but is it a ‘war crime’, as so many are quick to label the tanks and the operation in general? This comes down to the execution of the plan, and specific details governing the rules of engagement under the Hague Convention (ratified by Germany in 1909) and Geneva Convention (ratified by Germany in 1929). It must be said, however, that this is far from the only case of such tactics being employed during the Second World War – and the Germans were not the only side to employ ruse de guerre tactics.
One thing to address is the name. These vehicles are most commonly known as ‘Ersatz M10s’ with the German word Ersatz meaning artificial, substitute, or imitation. However, this nom de guerre is a modern fallacy, thanks in no small part to its addition in recent media – it also goes by Panther/M10. In reality, there is no known record of an official name given to these vehicles. The most official designation for these vehicles comes from a post-battle US Army technical report, which gave them the long-winded – and bleeding obvious – title of ‘Panther Tanks Disguised as M10 Gun Motor Carriages’…

sus m10
Fun Fact I remember! Another example of a vehicle disguised as part of Operation Greif, in this case, a StuG acting – albeit poorly – as an ‘Ersatz M7’. While the silhouette is recognizable, it is important to stress that these were being seen through tank optics. Seeing a green vehicle with Allied stars on, an American gunner would at least think twice before engaging. That was the intention of the disguise.
Dude just 2 days ago I read a article about it
@WritersCrusadersAirCo2 who did you upload an image on the description???
When the m10 is sus
@WritersCrusadersAirCo2 thanks
@MarteenLockkenn sure thing, I'll be interested of this new tank of yours
@WritersCrusadersAirCo2 Can I use your Reticle HUD for my new Tank?
@Boeing727200F yes i really need da M10
one fact about it that its traverse turret is so slow it takes a whole 1¼ minute to complete a 360° spin
@Randomplayer that would be interesting, the American fooling the Germans at their own game
Now make a M10 disguised as a panther
hold on the third image has a REAL M10 in it I WANT
Ja, sehr gut👍
@Rob119WithA105mmHowitzer well okay then, show me what you got!
@WritersCrusadersAirCo2 it'd be better to show you. Gib second
@Rob119WithA105mmHowitzer Mind I ask what you modify this into?
Hey ik you already said I could modify your tanks... but mind if I modify this one?
wolf in sheep's clothing
@ReimuAce25 even if I replaced the parts, people still don't believe me that I've changed them. But I'll try to reduce it
"Hey wait, that M10 has no open turret!"
@Zero0Two2 yeah I'm sure it was alot easier to shape a panther to look like a m10 then say a panzer 4 or III
@Rob119WithA105mmHowitzer the shape is probably easier to replicate with panther considering size and characteristics
@WritersCrusadersAirCo2 yeah, that’s why I said it’s better than the one I made, because it’s just a modded version of yours. This one is actually good looking and realistic.
