Northern Explorer, number 1 or the compass class, entered service with Red Clover Ferries. She, along with her sisters, were ordered by ONL, originally to be named ONL Northern Merchant. Because of a small financial issue, she was purchased by RCF halfway through construction. The purchase was on a condition that ONL would be able to charter the ship for refit cover whenever needed. She can sail up to 16 knots, and can carry 1300 passengers, and has 100 crew aboard.
