MD12 is expected to make its first flight in 1995 and enter service in 1997. At that time, McDonnell Douglas planned to manufacture large parts of the MD-12 in Taiwan because McDonnell Douglas expected that airlines in Asia would place large orders for the MD-12 at that time. China Airlines was likely to purchase it and use it to fly direct flights from Taipei to Hong Kong.
