(This is a fictional aircraft)

The Curtiss-Wright R-01 "Indy Special" was a race plane built to compete in the 1937 Indianapolis air circuit. Designed to be extremely fast on the straights, it was built with one Curtiss-Wright's first ever overboost systems, allowing the plane to reach unheard of speeds in short bursts. However, after attempting to qualify, it was determined the overboost system was not circuit legal and had to be removed from the plane. The airframe, minus the overboost, went on to compete in the Indy Air Circuit for four years, during which it earned a reputation for it's notorious stability issues. On straights it was like a bullet, but in turns, even a skilled pilot could find themselves in an uncontrollable spin if they weren't careful. Coupled with it's extremely fast take-off speed, and poor low-speed handling (making landings difficult), Curtiss-Wright could find few pilots brave enough to pilot the R-01. After racking up two third place titles, and no first place victories, the design was retired after only it's fourth year racing. Only one example of the plane remains as a static display at the Curtiss-Wright headquarters.
