North American NA-78 "Percheron"

30.0k Dumpworks  7.1 years ago

This was North American's design for the US Army's super fighter program, the NA-78 was tested very limitedly as when it was flight ready the war was almost over and the US Army was losing interest in the program, though the NA-78 almost brought the Army's interest back as it was incredibly quick, even when it wasn't at full power it was still faster than a majority of the aircraft in the program and it had very similar armament to it's German contemporary the Messerchmitt Me-262, it's only big fault is the engine and it's location on the aircraft like most of the aircraft within the program it's engine was somewhat unreliable, prone to breaking or just didn't work, but once plans like the Bells XP-83 took flight there was little to no hope for a propellar driven fighter entering Army service ever again
