History
The Camionetta Desertica Model 42, also recognized as the SPA-Viberti AS.42 or Sahariana, represented an Italian reconnaissance vehicle during World War II. The AS.42 (Africa Settentrionale, signifying North Africa) was the brainchild of SPA-Viberti. It shared the chassis of the AB 41 armored car, which included the advantageous four-wheel steering. However, the AS.42 was equipped with a specialized 2x4 transmission tailored for desert operations, primarily serving in reconnaissance capacities. Its inception can be attributed to requests from units stationed on the North African front. These units required a highly maneuverable, long-range vehicle resembling the ones effectively employed by the British Long Range Desert Group, renowned for reconnaissance and raiding missions.
