'The gentlemans V-Bomber'
The valiant was the first V-Bomber to enter service (1955) and the only V- bomber to have dropped live Atomic weapons, It was used in 9 RAF squadrons, and heavily influenced the design of the B52-Stratofortress.
On 11th october 1956 WZ366 dropped a Downrated Blue Danube A-Bomb over a test site in south Australia, This was the first British aircraft to drop an Atomic weapon.
On 15th May 1957 A Valiant dropped Britain's First H-Bomb starting a series of tests known as operation Grapple.
Once the other V-Bombers entered service many Valiants got converted to tankers, reconnaissance/countermeasures roles.
They were used in the Suez crisis and dropped 842 tons of bombs.
Following the 1960 loss of a U2 spyplane to a russian SAM British V-Bomber doctrine was changed from high altitude to low altitude flying, This unfortunatley caused the end of the Valiant, as low level turbulence played havoc on the airframe, Valiants were then retired and scrapped, only one still remains at RAF museum Cosford, Valiant XD818, the lone survivor of a once beautiful fleet.
ENJOY!
