105k RailfanEthan  8.1 years ago

The Camel Trophy was from 1980 - 2000. The mass expedition was nicknamed "The Olympics of 4x4s." During the 80s, the main focuses were South American countries (Brazil), a few African countries, and Australia. In the 90s, still trekking in those continents, except they traveled to Siberia & the USSR. Mexico, Chile, and Argentina followed.

Common improvements and additions were made to vehicles. Included were Land Rover Defenders and the classic Series model. Snorkels, tires, electrical enhancements, roll cages, repair tools ( jacks, shovels, etc), and lots of fuel. Although Land Rover dominated the "competition," a few other vehicles participated - such as a Ford licensed CJ5.
