The Hawker Hunter is a British transonic jet - powered fighter aircraft developed by Hawker Siddeley Aircraft for the United Kingdom Royal Air Force (RAF) in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was designed to take advantage of the engine The newly developed Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet and swept wing was the first Hawker-produced jet aircraft acquired by the RAF. On 7 September 1953, the first modified prototype broke the world air speed record for aircraft, reaching a speed of 727.63 mph (1,171.01 km/h or 632.29 knots).
