VC10

In terms of looks, Boeing and Airbus (or any others for that matter!) have nothing on the best looking commercial airliner ever built! I’m of course talking about the VC10 made by Vickers-Armstrong. First flown in 1962 the VC10 was designed to service the far flung reaches of Empire. Suitably the aircraft excelled at operating in ‘hot and high’ conditions using shorter runways. Performance was such that she still holds the record for a subsonic commercial airliner crossing the Atlantic at 5 hours 1 minute. The VC10 was also hugely popular with passengers for its comfort and low cabin noise levels. With all these positives there just had to be a spanner in the works for widespread commercial viability. Said spanner came in the shape of financial difficulties at Vickers eroding much of the confidence in the aircraft leading to limited global interest. The oil crises of 1973 also led to earlier models being retired from service and noise restrictions only added fuel to the fire quickly engulfing the queen of the skies. BOAC ended up using the remainder of their VC10 fleet as down payment for future purchases from Boeing and in the process, earning themselves one of their better known names. The final VC10s were retired from RAF service in 2013 where they were being used in the aerial refuelling role as VC10K3s, the best inflight refuelling view any pilot will ever see.....I’ve completed this build in BOAC livery (a.k.a better on a camel, or Boeing only air corporation) as, rather ironically, they were its major purchaser. It would be nice if there was a small airstrip to land on that wasn’t an aircraft carrier because this would get there and out again! VTOL for flaps and toggle 8 to switch off lights. I’ve tried to do justice to this graceful beauty of the skies, you may just find it a fresh breath of wind amidst the countless 7something7s and A-series (albeit some are magnificent) airliners doing laps on SP so please enjoy!

@Tang0five oh man I remember when you had to make a fuselage thin, then add a wing or some other part, and then make it thick again to make it fit in smoothly. No wonder I was a terrible builder back then hahaha

Good lord no! This was made prior to when iOS could nudge parts together and you had to ‘convince’ parts to join. This things not even to scale. I started doing things to scale a while back which is when I started noticing the crashes - especially with 4 engines beasts. @Mustang51

@Tang0five was this a large build? I’ve only ever done it to fighter jets and they seem to perform fine but I did add a lot of air breaks

Good to know I might try that. Although I’ve made a build before with zero drag parts and it’s hard getting setting enough drag so it slows down realistically and not drifting like it’s in space. @Mustang51

@Tang0five have you tried reducing the drag? That’s often a huge reason for it. I think drag points cause even more lag than part count

400 parts, if it’s a large aircraft it’s seems to crash all the time even on low settings. @Mustang51

@Tang0five I haven’t really tried a serious airliner apart from my really old Dash 8. Maybe I should give it a go after I finish the 3-4 builds I’m currently working on actually. I think I have more than enough experience now. Also I’ve never tried lower case letters for a reason hahaha. Those curves are way too hard and there’s too many. How many parts can your iPad handle?

Have you not tried to give the 1-11 a bash just out of interest? The only reason I ask about lettering I’ve only ever done capitals. Lower case will ramp up the difficulty/parts. It’s a small enough bird though so my iPad shouldn’t struggle too badly. Funnily enough the Britannia I was making was going to be B-Cal or Donaldson livery but the scale of that beast made for constant crashes, so she ended up with a plain finish unfortunately. @Mustang51

Lol I probably got carried away with the upvotes though. I was glad you had plenty of aircraft to choose from which were actually great and upvote worthy hahaha

@Tang0five well I only made my first insignia which bends around a cockpit the other day but I’m pretty happy with it. If you’re wondering if I’d be able to make that lion, I’m going to say I probably couldn’t do it very well. If that part is too hard, just a golden circle would be fine lol. With lettering though I’m pretty good

I counted 23 which is more than generous of you! Interesting you should mention the 1-11, Im definitely interested in one. I’m finishing off a trident for the tri-jet challenge and I might just get in to it afterwards. How are you with insignia/lettering? @Mustang51

Okay I think that should be all 21 upvotes! If I miscounted please let me know and I’ll add more :)
By the way, I don’t usually ask for these but I have a build request. Could you make a BAC One Eleven in British Caledonian livery? My grandfather used to work for B Cal and was specifically an engineer for that aircraft and I’ve sadly not seen a good one anywhere on the site. Cheers!

@Tazziedevil04 you’ve got some nice looking builds so just do what your doing! I focus on doing replicas (maybe I have no imagination!) and try achieving as much detail as possible, which was difficult on iPad before the latest update. Proportion is important to me and I like to have a plan view of whatever I’m building open in safari so I can swipe between that and sp. I find I have to be really into what I’m building as they are taking longer to build and I have less free time these days. Maybe do lesser known types as I know they certainly catch my eye more than another mustang or b17.....Good luck mate - I look forward to your next build!
