A-9
VTOL Naval-Based Attacker.
It entered development after the circum-ocean war, when we realized that as good as the B-2/A-3 was, it was heavy and cumbersome and needed to operate from equally heavy and cumbersome carriers that were easy pray for enemy bombers and ASMs. The result of that program was the X-3, a light VTOL aircraft capable of operating out of small carriers. The Navy was satisfied and told us to "Put bombs on it". When we tried to explain that it was an X plane that wasn't designed to carry bombs and had a shorter pilot lifespan that kamikaze pilots we were kindly persuaded to continue with the program and the A-9 is the result.
WARNING: INITIAL VTO WILL INVOLVE LOTS OF SPINNING.
