In 1944, the P-83 Thunderclouds were small, but lacked heavy arament. The P-87 had a while before it was realeased, so off the production lines came the P-38 Thundercloud Barricuda, with a heavier arament and new heat-seeking sidewinder missiles. It was used throughout WWII and was retired in 1964.
