History: Designed in late 1947, the PF-51 Groundhog was an SGA (Specifically Ground Attack) variant of the P-51 Mustang. It entered service with the USAF in early 1949, and was first deployed in Korea in the 1950s. Though slower than the original design, it could take a lot more fire and had better pilot protection. It also featured an ejector seat. The aircraft shown was flown by Daniel "Dirty Dan" Simmons from 1949-1956. On October 19, 1956, Simmons was flying a patrol over the border with two other members of his squadron. He fell back behind them to check for damage, seeing as the third aircraft's pilot had reported a faulty fuel gauge. American flak gunners mistook Simmons' Groundhog for an enemy aircraft due to the star on his tail, and opened fire. They hit his engine, which forced him to descend to a lower altitude. After a few more minutes, Simmons bailed out of his aircraft, and descended into the ocean. He was never found by rescue teams. When he disappeared, Simmons had a total of fifty-five ground target kills and sixteen aircraft kills to his name.
