Albatros D.III
next wiki xd / While the Albatros D.II fighter was being produced, Robert Thelen had already begun designing a new, improved model of the aircraft. The Inspectorate of the Air Forces of the German Empire was strongly impressed by the French half-planes of the Nieuport system, and German manufacturers were asked to copy this type of apparatus. The Albatross company did not bypass this fashion trend, but its engineers, refusing direct copying, nevertheless made characteristic changes to the airframe design of the third fighter model. As a result, the configuration of the wings changed, the lower wing received a narrower chord, and the upper one had a larger span and beveled ends. This made it possible to improve the pilot's view, increase the efficiency of the ailerons, but entailed increased vibration of the wings, which led to their destruction during a prolonged dive. They tried to solve the problem by strengthening the design of the lower wings, additional slopes to the V-shaped racks of the biplane box began to be used to increase its rigidity. But they did not manage to get rid of the increased vibration until the end, even on the next model. The engine power of the aircraft was also increased from 160 hp to 175 hp due to an increase in the compression ratio. The radiator located in the middle part of the upper wing was shifted to the right during production. This change was made based on combat experience, which showed that the radiator located above the pilot's head with its pipelines interfered with the view, and once pierced, it released a jet of hot water and steam directly into the pilot's face.

It looks really good but doesn’t fly too great. The CoM should be a little more forward than the CoL. Cool plane overall though and could be easily made much better :)
