AH-64 armed helicopter is the product of the advanced armed helicopter program (Aah) proposed in 1973. Prior to the AAH program, the U.S. Army implemented the advanced air fire support system (AAFSS) program, but the program was too ambitious. After a lengthy and expensive research and development process, it was cancelled on August 9, 1972. The US Army reviewed the reasons for its failure and soon proposed a practical alternative, AAH.
