After a military think tank identified a need to separate the role performed by Hawker series aircraft the joint military R&D staff began to develop two separate fighters that highlighted Hawker strengths. The A-14 is designed as a high altitude, high stability interceptor with the sole job of climbing up to and shooting down high altitude strategic bombers. On the side, it can also perform air-superiority missions but is poor at dogfighting.
