The F-111 "Aardvark" was a twin-seat, twin-engine, variable-sweep wing multirole bomber developed by General Dynamics in the 1960s, primarily designed for ground attack, strategic strike, and electronic warfare missions. It was the first aircraft to feature a variable-sweep wing design, capable of supersonic flight with a top speed of Mach 2.5 and a long operational range, excelling in low-altitude, high-speed penetration missions. Equipped with advanced radar and navigation systems, the F-111 could carry a variety of precision-guided munitions and played a key role in conflicts such as the Vietnam War and the 1986 U.S. airstrike on Libya. Despite facing challenges during its early development, the F-111 became a crucial part of the U.S. military’s tactical strike force until it was gradually replaced by aircraft like the F-15E in the 1990s.
