P-71A

929 IssaIwan  4.9 years ago

An elegant fighter introduced in the final year of WWII to replace the P-65A2, which it quickly did. Cheaper to manufacture, lighter, more manueverable, and with a more reasonable armament consisting of 6x 12.7mm machine guns and 1x 40mm Hispano cannon, it was very clear that the P-65A2 had no contest against the P-71A. Though slower due to its weaker engine of only 2000HP, the P-71A could be fitted with something more powerful, which it did with the P-71A2 and its 3000HP engine. However, it wasn't nearly as modular, with few opportunities to make siginificant changes to the aircraft that don't compromise performance. Regardless, it wasn't broken so it didn't need to be fixed. After the World War (1939-1945) and the first third of the subsequent War Against Communism (1948-2012), the P-71A and P-71A2 had found use in the civilian markets as armed, single-man transports, along with being used by station security forces against pirates.
