The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a multi-role military aircraft capable of vertical take-offs and landings (VTOL) and short terrain (STOL). It was designed to fulfill the functions of a conventional helicopter and a high-speed, long-range turboprop aircraft (Convertiplano). Its development program began in 1981 and cost $35 billion. The project was delivered in 1983 to Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters to develop the tiltrotor aircraft. The companies would jointly produce the plane once it was complete. The first V-22 flew in 1989. The design underwent some changes, due to technical difficulties, which led to several delays in the program. In June 2007, the first units were delivered to the United States Armed Forces and began to replace the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight in the navy. In October of the same year, the air force also accepted the first orders for the V-22. In 2009, in Iraq, they were used for the first time in a military operation. They were also used in intelligence and rescue actions in Afghanistan, Sudan and Libya. Already Israel, Japan and the United Arab Emirates are studying to buy some units of these aircraft.
