Further development in the Vyumpel-Sukhoi project has resulted in the Vyumpel-Sukhoi Air Defence Variant. Designed primarily as a multi-role fighter, it is equipped with the brand new Vyumpel X-1 Air-to-Air missile and the Vyumpel AS-1 Air-to-Ground missile and is also equipped with new Vy-RD6 Afterburning engines such that it can attain speed quickly and is capable of equipping drop tanks for extended missions.
