Designed by the Mikoyan-Gurichev bureau to intercept the planned XB-70 Valkyrie US bomber, the Mig-25 remains one of the fastest interceptors to enter military service. Able to reach Mach 2.8, the Mig-25 briefly held world speed and altitude records. It is capable of firing two large long-range AA-6 "Acrid" missiles. Over forty Mig-25s are believed to in service today in Russia and surrounding countries.
