The X-37 Smudger was a proof of concept for military monoplanes, designed to show off the concept. Capable of 190mph it was unique in its powerplant, a 300hp Sentinel steam motor, converted to oil firing. With its success, it was sent to the UK to show off around Sentinel works... until the RAF requisitioned it, glued a 2pdr to it and sent it against the Luftwaffe in France. Didn't end well. At all.
