Poyasakai I-161 Interceptor-fighter
Special Type Interceptor-Fighter
A special radar.
During 1958, the Karyan Self Defence Force approved the development of a high power radar. The ASFC-161 airsearch and fire control radar was considered the most advanced radar in that era. This upgraded radar was significantly better than its contemporaries. Able to detect a single fighter from 50Km(31M) away, Track 4-7 aircraft at the same time, distinguish which aircraft is which and plot a decent firing solution for the single onboard gun.
Advanced Interceptor Project
The Karyan Air Defence Force was informed about the new and advanced radar in 1958. They launched the Advanced Interceptor Project (AIP). The KADF soon contacted and sent the requirements to the Poyasakai Company about the new project. The requirements included but were not limited to
1. Use the Kitakaze 22 jet engine
2. Climb to 10km/32.8KFt in less than 5 minutes with an afterburner.
3. Mount the ASFC-161 system and the GS-2 gun sight.
4. Break the sound barrier at low altitude with an afterburner.
5. Ability to carry 4+ IR guided missiles.
Upon reading the 20+ requirements the design team that was tasked with designing the ambitious AIP project were shocked with the requirements. But the Karyan Government helped out the AIP by allocating a large amount of money for the project.
Prototype on its trial run
Prototype
The I-161 first flew in early 1961. The first flight was considered a success as the aircraft managed to fulfill almost all of the requirements. The only requirement that was not fulfilled was low speed maneuverability and the long range. The personnel considered these two as optional as they considered that interceptors are not supposed to be maneuvering at low speed and that a long range and interceptor were not a good mix.
This Variant
I-161-II armed with 4 AAMs is capable of reaching 13,000m/42.6Kft in 00:1:30 at a 50° climb with the afterburner enabled or 00:04:25 at a 30° climb with no afterburner. At the altitude of 13,000m/42.6kft she can travel at 1,229kph/763mph without afterburner and 2,000kph/1242mph with afterburner. The total fuel time of this model is 35minutes with 100% throttle.
the Poyasakai Kitakaze 23 engine
Her armament consists of the
AAM 159/161 family
This missile family is a passive guided infrared homing missile. It delivers a powerful explosive warhead against a target. The missile is fast however it is not an agile missile. It has a maximum range of <4.5km/2.8Ml. Leading this missile as if it were a gun is recommended for increasing hits/
AAM-159/61-V
Ga-23K
A 23mm autocannon developed in Fabella and licensed produced in the Karyan Union.
Extra controls
AG1 is for the autopilot
AG5 is for the afterburner
Flaps down is for the flaps
