SU-25 TMS
The fictional twin-seater Su-25 variant, known as the Su-25TMS (Tactical Multi-role Strike), was developed as a significant evolution of the classic Su-25 Frogfoot, intended to bridge the gap between traditional close air support (CAS) aircraft and long-range strike platforms. This new version emerged from Russia's need for a versatile, heavier-hitting CAS aircraft capable of engaging strategic targets while still maintaining effectiveness in intense, low-altitude support missions.
Purpose and Development
Initially conceptualized in the late 2000s, the Su-25TMS was designed to operate in high-threat environments where ground-based defenses and enemy aircraft posed serious challenges. The core philosophy was to maintain the rugged, battlefield-hardened capabilities of the original Su-25 while extending its range, weapon-carrying capacity, and mission flexibility.
Equipped with 6 KH-55 Swarm cruise missiles and 2 KH-59M heavy air-to-ground missiles, the Su-25TMS could target fortified installations or strategic enemy assets deep within contested airspace. It also boasted 11 hardpoints, allowing it to carry a wide range of munitions, from anti-tank guided missiles and rockets to air-to-air missiles for self-defense.
Design Enhancements
The elongated cockpit accommodates a second crew member responsible for managing the more complex electronic warfare systems and advanced weapons. This layout allows the pilot to focus on low-altitude flying and rapid target engagement, while the weapons officer can manage the KH-55 Swarm cruise missiles and other high-tech armaments.
Other upgrades include an improved engine configuration that allows for higher speeds and extended range, as well as reinforced landing gear for operating on rough airstrips near the frontlines. The Su-25TMS also carries a 50mm autocannon, delivering devastating firepower against ground targets in urban or fortified environments, and a 25mm gun for limited air-to-air capability.
Operational History
The Su-25TMS saw its debut in a high-intensity conflict where ground forces needed heavy, long-range CAS support. Initially tested in exercises simulating anti-insurgency operations, it soon became a critical asset in contested airspaces where the enemy had significant air and ground defenses. Its ability to launch standoff cruise missiles like the KH-55 allowed it to strike beyond the immediate range of air defenses while its agility and armor maintained its CAS role.
The Su-25TMS became known for its ability to loiter, providing ongoing support for advancing ground forces. Its distinctive roar, paired with the unique dual-cockpit silhouette, became both a reassurance to allies on the ground and a source of dread to opposition forces.
