Passenger Conversion Challenge
Before everything, the first thing I want to note is that I will be judging each entry on an individual basis. As long as you put genuine effort into it, you will have a chance to win or place at a top spot. Very often I see people not wanting to join challenges because they see great builds have already been submitted or other skilled builders have already entered. In short, I will be considering EFFORT just as important as skill. With all that said though I will not be completely disregarding long-time creators' experience and skill, but I will definitely try to keep things fair to everyone.
Welcome to the
Passenger Conversion Challenge
Your task in this challenge is to take an aircraft that has been designed for anything that's not transport of paying passengers, and convert it to one that was.
The following rules apply to the aircraft you can pick as your starting point:
- It has to be a steerable aircraft. Airplanes, helicopters, airships, etc., are allowed, a hot air balloon for example would not be.
- The design must have already existed before this challenge was announced. It can be completely hypothetical, never built, or entirely fictional. It can even be one of your own original fictional SP builds, as long as it was created prior to this challenge.
- It must not have been designed as a passenger aircraft. It also can't already be a modification of a previous passenger plane, for example you can't pick one of the Boeing 747 freighter versions and just turn it back into an airliner. Your safest bet would be large military aircraft or strategic cargo aircraft. Something like a C-130 or a general aviation plane that would normally carry passengers would technically apply, but in that case you will have to be extra creative with the conversion.
Rules for the entry upload:
- Your entry must be a successor to this post.
- Your entry must be below 1000 parts (remember, part count does not equal quality, it can even be more impressive to get more done with less parts)
- Your entry must be public
- Before submitting check the rules again in case something changed! I will try not to change anything but it is always possible I forgot something important, in which case it will be added.
EDIT:
- Your entry must be a new build/modification, you can not enter with an already existing conversion build you made
The following points will be mainly taken into consideration when judging:
- How "realistic" the conversion is. Obviously the point of this challenge is to create unrealistic things, however I would still prefer you to keep things reasonably "realistic", which mainly means you can't just put a few more windows on an F-16 and say it now magically carries 100 people. First of all, your creation should be physically feasible, and as a secondary point it should be something that could actually be built in some alternate universe vaguely related to ours.
- What the description and backstory of your creation is. If you do decide to go with something more "out there" and unrealistic, it will be fine as long as you give it a good description justifying its existence. If you pick something similar to the Tu-114 which is an actual real-world conversion of a bomber design into an airliner, less emphasis will be put on your description and more on the overall looks and functionality. If you do something really screwed up like turning the B-2 stealth bomber into an airliner, you better have a really good description with a backstory to back it up! Feel free to use any existing SP RP elements that you may have set up, but try to keep the description self-contained (aka make it make sense even for someone unfamiliar with your personal RP lore).
- How your creation looks. This is mainly the part where context and subjective judgement will matter, as long as you invest genuine effort into the build you will be good. You do not need to model any interior on your submission, however in that case more emphasis will be put on the exterior.
- How you converted the original design. Remember you are trying to convert an existing design, and as such the result should still resemble the original. Don't build something completely from scratch with no regard for the original and just call it a "conversion", but similarly don't just completely copy the original design and just add a couple windows to it. Think about what would be added to or removed from the original if a conversion like that happened in the real world.
- How your aircraft handles. This is once again where a decent amount of realism is appreciated. Not everything has to handle like a 5th gen fighter jet, especially after being converted to a tame civilian airliner variant. Passive in-flight stability is also important.
- Any extra functionality that works well with the design.
If you are unsure about anything, feel free to ask. I can tell you whether your idea for your challenge submission is within the rules if you aren't certain.
Recap:
1) Pick a real/fictional aircraft that's not an airliner
2) Think about whether it could technically be converted into an airliner
3) Think about what modifications would have to be done to it to turn it into an airliner serviceable by commercial airports
4) Build it (with genuine effort)
5) Don't think about other people's submissions
6) Upload it
7) Win
The current deadline is [redacted]
The deadline can be shortened if not enough people join, or extended if there's enough people still joining late. Because of that, please let me know if you consider joining by commenting or upvoting this (feel free to take your upvote away after the challenge).
The results will be announced in a forum post after the challenge ends. A link to the post will be included right here --> [NOT YET]
Rewards for participants will be announced either near or after the deadline, according to the amount of entries received (but it will be the classic upvote thing).

@ChamDel78 as is extensively written in the description, yes. The starting design doesn't have to be a cargo plane, it can be military or something else, creativity counts
@IDNSatyaBUKANNova that can, I meant that you can't just completely reupload something without changes
@NobleMobileUser the original aircraft design you want to modify can be literally anything (within reason), it can be a real aircraft, a real design that was never built, completely fictional, etc, it doesn't have to exist as an SP build. It just has to be something designed prior to the challenge
Oh, Nevermind, Its 2022-
Derek please
Here is mine for the challenge https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/09OE4s/Guestrian-Airlines-B29
speaking the truth, I think the passenger B-52 is normal
@DerekSP just checking if you are aware of this
hey man, you still there?
Hello, just making sure you are aware of this?
@DerekSP Hey man, just asking, when do you think the results will be ready?
挑战已经结束了
I think I will give this a try
https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/TgRG11/AN-38-UNFINISHED
don't have time to make the interior of my AN-38, so I'm posting an unfinished model
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfCyVvxznE8
my an-38 cargo from this
challenge
I have submitted
only 3 planes!
@BigAeroplane it does not have to exist on the SImplePlanes website, I only mentioned that because it can be something already made in SP, but doesn't have to be. In fact it is probably better to not modify an existing build in SP, you can, but you don't have to.
Let me carefully straighten out again, the aircraft we are going to build is a passenger aircraft, from a cargo /bombing ... Prototypes can be fictional or have real aircraft, but all prototypes must be submitted to the official website before the challenge begins
I made an-38 and, an-22(antei) passenger an-122!
@DerekSP umm ok, ill modified my plain b-52
please bring a time limit of 23 September
Anyway, it looks like Perry the Platypus you made in this build
